Apple Crisp Granola Recipe

Here’s a simple recipe that you can use to make your own apple crisp granola breakfast cereal. Easy to make and so tasty, this granola features all the flavors of homemade apple crisp dessert, including rolled oats, honey, butter, vanilla, and sweet dried apples.

You can use organic and/or vegetarian ingredients if you wish, and substitute other goodies to suit your taste. Plus, you’ll save tons of money by making your own!

This granola makes a satisfying, filling breakfast served with milk and is also great sprinkled over Greek yogurt.

Ingredients Notes

In addition to pantry staples like vanilla, cinnamon and salt, here are the ingredients you’ll need to make this crunchy granola:

  • Organic rolled oats – You want the old-fashioned kind, not the instant or quick-cook type.
  • Dried apples – See variations below for different dried fruits you can use if you prefer.
  • Wheat germ
  • Chopped blanched almonds – See ideas below for nuts you can substitute.
  • Butter – You can use salted or unsalted, depending on your taste preference. You can also substitute coconut oil or your favorite cooking oil for the vegan version.
  • Coconut oil – or your favorite cooking oil such as avocado oil or canola oil
  • Honey – You can substitute maple syrup or light or dark brown sugar for the vegan version

Recipe Variations

Feel free to adjust this easy apple granola recipe to suit your own tastes. You might like to experiment with other dried fruits such as:

  • Dried cherries (my personal favorite)
  • Dates
  • Currants
  • Apricots
  • Pineapple
  • Craisins
  • Banana Chips
  • Coconut Flakes

Granola Seeds and Nuts Variations

You can substitute your favorite nuts and seeds in this granola recipe. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Pecans
  • Walnuts
  • Hazelnuts
  • Cashews
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Pistachios
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Sesame seeds
  • Ground flax seeds
  • Pepitas (hulled pumpkin seeds)

Extra Crunchy Homemade Granola

If you like crunchy clusters in your granola, add 2 tablespoons of water to the mixture and squeeze the clusters together with your hands prior to baking.

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • large rimmed baking pan

Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups organic rolled oats the old-fashioned kind, not the instant or quick-cook type
  • 1/2 cup chopped dried apples
  • 1/4 cup wheat germ
  • 1/2 cup chopped blanched almonds
  • 3 tablespoons butter or substitute coconut oil for the vegan version
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil or your favorite cooking oil
  • 2/3 cup honey or substitute maple syrup or packed brown sugar for the vegan version
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Instructions
 

  • Grease a large cookie sheet and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl and spread on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake for 20 minutes, stirring once or twice during the baking process.
  • Cool to room temperature and store in an airtight container. Makes about 5 cups, or 10 servings.

Notes

To best preserve its fresh flavor, store granola in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks.

I actually wanted to make granola this week and had it in my meal plan, but then when I stumbled across your recipe, I decided to make it then and there. It’s yummy!
